pioneer dvd rom stopped working!!! help

Please help i am getting desperate!!

Originally had IDE channels as
primary master - Cboot)4gb / slave D:E: (capture) 60gb
secondary master -pioneer a06 dvd rom / slave -lite-on 24xrewriter

this was ok but dropped frames with even small res. caps with vdub via pinnacle pctv. Tried lots to improve - then had brainwave - make cap (60gb) drive secondary MASTER to improve data flow. It worked - few if any dropped frames with reasonable res.

I CAN'T TYPE FAST ENOGH!!

So new set up is
primary master C: (boot 4 gb) / slave pioneer ao6 dvd rom
secondary master D:E: (capture 60gb) / slave lite-on rewriter

Worked well - no frame drops with vdub/pinnaclepctv at ok res
BUT - got error message when using pioneer ao6 dvd
"F is not accessible - a device attached to the system is not functioning"

This 'helpful' message still appears despite me checking and forcing the aspi layer, installing dos drivers (not recomended or any use), clean reinstalling windows TWICE with the dvd attached/unattached to see if windows will 'plug and play it' ok. Got it working eventually BUT noticed sometime later that the original error message came back.

It seems that the pioneer ao6 dvd drive cannot exist as a 'slave' in which case i will have to revert to my original setup and give up on capturing until i can get a better spec somp. (cel 800 jetway 920bf mobo win98se)

Sorry for posting this way but i kept getting cut off or something (slow typing - lot to say) about 4th try in posting as one.

Please help - someone must know how to solve this one
