im sorry if this is a stupid question but i just need to know for sure. =)

i use DVDShrink to back up the main movie of my dvd's in "No Compression" mode (don't really care about space--like the quality and the movies are only about 4-5gb). Once it's done i have my pretty little Video and Audio TS folders. Is this a full quality rip of the dvd? in other words, is there ANY difference between the rip and the original dvd (sound + video)?

following that, if i burn that video/audio ts folder back onto a dvd, would that be the same as the original dvd?

again, sorry if this is a stupid question, and i did search but i never found a blunt answer to the question.

    thanks!!

Sure, if it's 100%, it should be an exact copy of the original, no shrinkage.

    sorry, i lied. =)

little follow up question: i have my HTPC hooked up to my surround sound receiver (marantz sr7001) via the 5.1 analog inputs. if i rip a dvd with no compression with its DTS track will that play off my HTPC?

also, just to make sure, if i want to burn the rip back to a dvd, it will obviously have the DTS track?

thanks, and sorry if these are silly questions

If you keep the rip intact (i.e. the video_ts folders etc) then yes, it will burn back with DTS audio.

Will your HTPC play it in surround ? Because you are using the 5.1 analogue inputs to your amp, your HTPC must do all the decoding and send all 6 channels out itself. Assuming you have a DTS decoder in your playback software (and assuming that AC3 5.1 plays back correctly), you should have no trouble.

If the main movie is larger than will fit on a single layer DVD, DVD Shrink has the default behavior of dropping the DTS audio track. You will have to check before processing to be sure that the DTS track was not unselected. It's easy enough to put a check mark by it so it isn't dropped before processing. Whatever you do, I would not recommend that you just assume the DTS track is being kept and you always check to be sure.

Remember that one retains the option of using Re-Author Mode --> (Set) Start Frame --> (Set) End Frame to effectively split a longer movie over 2 discs. (This does lose all your Menus, however. I could be wrong, but I don't think this has any effect on the audio.) Just choose your divider point carefully: black transitional frames would be ideal, but I've gone with long shots of someone entering a hallway or walking under a bridge, where there is no dialogue -- for example. This is probably not as elegant as some of the options you may get from programs like DVDFab, but it is FREE, and it does get the job done.
