  1. I used DVD Shrink to reduce size of a VHS tape that I captured in two passes - with no problems -this morning.

Tonight I tried to reduce a commercial video ripped with Decryptor (something I have done many times) - the program runs the deep analysis and then goes off the air when I try to invoke the backup. This happens over and over again. When I reinstalled from one of the download websites, thinking that I had a possible file corruption, it did the same thing again. However, I did notice that they are now promoting DVDshrink 2007 - is something sneaking under the wire and turning off the old version to force us to buy the upgrade, or am I just being totally naive?

There could well be other factors at play here, including poorly ripped source - anything with ArCoSS should be run through FixVTS before being loaded into Shrink, and some versions of Nero not playing well with Shrink - use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn the results.

Always use RipIt4me with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. And then run PGCedit afterwards as it often picks up problems the other programs missed.

Studios have got wise to one-click programs and now routinely include dummy cells and other crap on a DVD which at best throws the timing out and can even kill playback altogether on some machines.

  5. Thanks to all who replied so promptly. First I apologise for maybe posting in the wrong forum, but I thought the Shrink 2007 might be a "news" item. Secondly, I fixed the problem by doing a system restore.

The object lesson here is to keep a change log of one's actions when doing system updates. I had done a "bad" install of an ARCsoft application that came with my new camera earlier in the day and had removed it immediately - obviously a reg entry had stuck around and done something weird. Working late into the Sunday night is a big mistake - makes my old brain go fuzzy.

Anyway, I got some good tips as a result, so thanks to all for their input (and patience). Now I can keep on backing up my grandaughter's discs before they get destroyed.

does this matter for movie only backups?

Yes, the Video Title Set (VTST) for a movie-only backup is as likely to contain errors as the main Video Title Set in a complex DVD. DVD Shrink re-author mode has even been known to introduce errors that were not in the original rip.
