I've encoded some AVIs to mpeg1 using FFMpegX and the MPEG1[.mpg] (mpeg2enc) encoder. The problem is on my macs in quicktime, the files will not play unless the $20 MPEG2 component is installed in the quicktime system folder. They play fine in windows and fine in VLC, video streams shows as this:

    'mpgv'

I have some mpeg1 files that I've encoded on a windows machine and they play fine in quicktime on my macs, the stream data also says 'mpgv', the audi is the same also.

When encoding to MPEG1[.mpg] (mpeg2enc) in FFMpegX why do I need to have the MPEG2 component for the files to play?

Here's my FFMpegX preset file and I've attached it also, could some please test?:

Will the original avi play in Quicktime? Anything other than 44.1KHz audio can also cause QT to refuse a file.

Take a problem movie to a Windows machine and use GSpot to see what it reports.

You can use VLC to recode to mp1. File>OpenFile>check Streaming Saving, then click Settings.
In the new tab check PlayFileLocally, click Browse, give the output file a name ending in mpg1,
Under transcoding options check both audio and video and use mpga and mpv1.

Set both video and audio output to something acceptable to QT. Audio should only be 44.1.
