I've been using Premiere for years and my colleagues who started editing after me use Vegas and they say I am mad, that Vegas is so much more user friendly and stable as well as easy to learn. They say I will never look back but as yet haven't changed over..Old dog new tricks and all that!

So -. you're talking about video editors? Quite a different beast from authoring apps. If you really want a good app to author, look no further than DVD-Lab Pro.

  6. I'm a big fan of Ulead DVD Workshop myself. For authoring, anyway, not for capture or editing or anything like that. It's kinda pricey but it's also dead-simple for most menu creation, which may or may not be to your taste. You can download the free trial at Ulead and check for yourself.

You need to think through what results you want and how much time you want to invest. Is this your job, your main hobby or do you want to get from start to finish quickly. Do you care if your project is easily identifiable to an application or do you want it to look professional? Are you willing to invest the effort to make it look professional?

Answer all this and the choice narrows.

If you want something that will let you edit DV files, create simple by neat menus and burn to DVD, consider one of the entry level home editing suites like premiere elements or Vegas Movie Studio.

DVD Workshop will let you make minor edits, transitions, cutting, splicing etc. It's no substtitute for a full fledged editor but for minor stuff like that it will suffice. As mentioned above there is a difference between editing and authoring applications, DVD workshop takes a slighlty different approach than most of the higher end authoring applications, it has some other features like native MPEG & AC3 encoding, the minor editing features etc. You can if you wanted go from capture to burn with it...

shreeit, for a simple solution that has worked well in the past for me to create quick dvd's of my home movies try Ulead DVD Movie Factory. They have a try before you buy download (100 megs) ... give it a whirl. V4 if you want more editing / general tools or V5 if you just want to create a DVD.

The title of this thread, and then your description is a little puzzling. And as others have pointed out, Authoring is different than Editing.

With that said, there are some excellent choices for packages that offer both Editing and Authoring.

VideoStudio 10 Plus is one of my favorites, and there's also the already mentioned Vegas MovieStudio and Premiere Elements.

My experience is mostly with the Ulead software, so I would recommend VideoStudio 10 Plus if you want to do more editing, and have some Authoring functionaility. MovieFactory gives you more Authoring with some Editing functionaility. And it appears both of these are going to have a new version release in the next few months (based on an email that included a coupon off of VideoStudio 11 and MovieFactory 6 -- their current versions are VideoStudio 10 and MovieFactory 5).

    Regards,
    George

Speaking from the perspective of a full-fledged editor and DVD authoring package, I've been using Sony's Vegas+DVD Production Suite for years. Vegas 7.0 and DVD Architect 4.0 are both powerful apps for video editing and DVD authoring, yet are quite approachable by someone who's on a "lower level" (there's plenty of room to grow, in other words). The full package is about $560 from Sony Media Software. I'll never look back.
