I own a Philips DVP 642 which plays avi (divx/xvid) files and recently downloaded a season of a TV show to burn onto a DVD (as a data disc) and watch. The disc played fine on my machine, but on my brothers machine (which is the same exact model), he only gets sound and no video. He has no problems playong other Divx or Xvid encoded files on the player. I did update my firmware a couple of times, and I also updated his. I dont think that would be the problem though because I dont think a firmware update has ever allowed playong of certain divx files. The type of files that arent playing correctly are divx5. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm quite surprised that DivX 5 is giving his 642 problems!
All of my 642s (we have 3 - first and second generations) get along very smoothly with DivX 5 and none of them ever had the firmware updated (I am too chicken to do so after a very bad experience w/another player we had). -
I think there is a topic where there are 2 versions of that 642.
At any rate, the date on the back of the machine would give you a hint as to which one you have.
I prefer their new models, 5960 or 5940.
