I cant figure out any way to get my files onto my PC using a Panasonic VDR D105 with a USB cable, movie maker doesnt recognize a device is attached. Manual and Panasonic isnt any help.

Do i have any other alternatives from taking mini DVD into another format such as AVI?

Id like to be able to send friends short AVIs etc

    Thanks

You don't have a miniDV or HDD camcorder. The USB port is most likely for transferring still photos to a computer. If you want to edit the video, you'll need to rip the DVD to your computer and go from there.

Yes, the USB port is for stills. Find the firewire (IEE-1394) port on the camera. (I have a similar model Panasonic and had a hard time finding it. It was under a rubber door on the bottom.) If your computer does not have a firewire card, you can get them cheap. For $25 I got a Pyro card that slipped into my home computer's PCI slot.

WinDV, a freeware program (search for a link on this site) will enable you to capture your mini-DV footage to AVI. To edit, look for video editing software that will handle the AVI files.

Hope this is a good start.

Oops! You said miniDVD, not mini-DV, didn't you? My firewire advice may not apply. Go with the DVD ripping option.
