I have exported a HD video file (*.mp2) off my TEAC HDRM 7250. I have contacted TEAC in Western Australia and they confirm that when the HD files is exported off the HD Tuner/Recorder to a USB drive, that the Linux software on the unit exports it as a MP2 file. For unknown reasons, MS Media Player 8-11 will play the file without audio. Relentless research has determined that MS Media Player can't play *.mp2 files very well. It will not play audio in Powerdvd 5-7, Adobe Premiere 2 plus a host of other video apps
I have already sussed out how to stream/save the file to a mpeg2 that plays the video and audio in MS Player 8-11 using the original exported file.
I am using VLC (0.8.6a) to stream/save the file to another format. What are the standard video and audio codec combinations for mp4 files. I would like them to play in Quicktime 7.0.3) Windows.

mp4 can contain several different formats, http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62723
h264 with aac would probably be best for hd video. But I don't think you can use vlc for that though.
What is the audio format in the mp2 source? identify the source with for example mediainfo. Maybe it is a transport stream(.ts) and then you can try hdtv2mpeg to convert to an ordinary mpeg2 file that is easier to convert. -
Please find MediaInfo analysis of problem file from HD Recorder. That tool is a bonus. In an ideal world that is savagely populated by MS i would still like to have a working audio codec that MS Media Player will work with, so that my other video app programs can access the mpeg file.

AC3 decoder isn't provided in a basic Windows OS - you'll need to install a 3rd party codec to play the files, that's all!
Trev -
Have downloaded a AC3 decoder from MediaTwins
AC3 Decoder
version : 1.2.6
updated : 10 November 2005
AC3 Audiocodec
http://www.codec-download.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=93
Rebooted and tried to play the mp2 file - still no sound in MS-MP 10
am trying other ac3 codecs -
Try AC3 Filter.
But it should work with powerdvd, it has it own ac3 decoder. -
Thanks - but it is still not working - have decided to go back to scratch on a borrowed machine.
Have loaded a clean install on a ACER Travelmate 530
WIN XP PRO - SP2 - Mediaplayer 10 - PowerDvd 5 - file still will not play - any suggestions
Is there anybody who is interested in downloading the file to test or play with.
I have access to a website to upload the file (74MB) -
Oz, the reason mp2's don't play in Windows is that the original mp1 codec was hacked by M$ to make their original wmv codec. The comments in the codec's DOS properties box is "Joy."
The wmv codec was then hacked by the original divx team (v. 3 and lower).
The hacked codecs has a M$ signature even though they weren't. The DOS comment was "Hacked With Joy".
M$ is big, but the movie industry is bigger. So when mp2's came out, to avoid further trouble, Microsoft wisely chose to leave it alone. Even unencrypted mp2's won't play in the WMP. -
If you wouldn't mind, please do host it somewhere. I'm pretty certain it can be fixed rather easily.
I remember this problem (if this is THAT problem). It is specific to Australian broadcasts on certain channels. The AC3 substream is sitting in 0xb0 instead of 0x80 . The player mistakes the AC3 for WAV and voila, no sound.
I think you can demux the AC3 and M2V with DGindex by checking the "Force Fusion Style Audio" dropdown choice under "Options"
Just in case, do make the file available for download.
Once this little problem is fixed, you'll be able to load your media into MpegStreamClip for Windows and batch convert to h264 Quicktime
