Hello there! I've been to the forest (jungle - northern shores) for a while and haven't heard a lot about Blu-Ray and HDVD. I know here in Brazil they are starting to rent some titles. My question is: What do the gurus around here have to say about those players? Are there new software (freeware) for back-ups? Is it still worth buying regular DVDs? Thanks in advance

It depends...if you already have a 50"+ tv with 1080p and some $$$$ over I would get hddvd and bluray now.

If you have a htpc a xbox360 hd dvd player would be a cheaper solution, https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=317738

Just to add to baldrick's repply. I already had a 720P 52" set + the X-box 360 so the addition of the HD-DVD dvd accessorie drive brouoght us to the HD-DVD world very cheaply. The only problem is that I really should have a 1080P TV to really take advantage of the HD-DVD resolution. My set and any other 780P or 1080I downsizes the 1080P hd-dvd source to set's lower native resolution. Still looks amazing to me though.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

It is now possible to rip BluRay and HD-DVD discs to hard disks and play them there. It is not possible at this time to convert ripped BluRay and HD-DVD movies to other formats or to re-author them. http://www.doom9.net has the latest information. You must go to the Forums and then go to the Decryption section. Sorry, but Doom9 does not allow direct linking, so you have to go to the main web page first.

Japan is the only place in Asia that seems interested in HD-DVD and BluRay. Most of the world outside of the US and Europe is waiting to see if either format will become popular. I am amazed that Brazil is already making HD-DVD and BluRay discs because I really thought that it might be several years before that happened. DVD is not going to die any time soon, so yes, it is still OK to buy DVDs.

Thanks to all (my friend Baldrick among them) who kindly took time to respond!

-Man, I've said I 've been to the jungle for a while - LOL LOL No, no, really; Brazil is very big and some of the world's newest technologies are already available for some extra bucks $$$$ Anyway, thanks for your answer on HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and regular DVDs. As I've said, some titles are already available around here. About being amazed on Brazilian Industries, please take a look here:

  6. My 2 cents; wait to buy High Def Movies when:

1.) Universal HD Players are common. LG has one now but its 1200.00 US and not hd-dvd certified.

    or

    2.) One Side gives up

    or

3.) All movie studios support only one format or all formats. If they support both then that means you'll need two players or a universal one.

This whole thing sucks. I would like to start getting HD movies, but I don't want to drop the cash on a player and the movies only to watch it go the way of the dodo.
For the love of God, use hub/core labels on your Recordable Discs!

Cunhambebe - I wasn't surprised because I think Brazil is some backwards country (I know better) but because places like Hong Kong and South Korea haven't started making BluRay and HD-DVD discs yet. Well, I can say that I haven't seen any BluRay or HD-DVD discs from those countries.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a big fan of the musical group Skank.

    Hi there...

C'mon man.... Brazil is making green fuel (from sugar cane) for the USA and the rest of the world. Maybe one day you can change your opinion on my country. I've got an idea: come here, you're welcome. We'll go to the northern shores, diving with the dolphins that I love so much; as much as I love your own country.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a big fan of the musical group Skank
-So you like Skank... Nice to hear you say that. Please let me know a server and I'll upload some of my MP3s for ya

    Cheers,
