Hello group,
I burned some videos I produced on new TAIYO YUDEN white inkjet hub dvd-r's.
The final burn done on Nero Express plays well on my Samsung set-top dvd player, and within Windows Xp. However, when I play on a cheap Diamond Vision player the video stalls, or becomes de-interlaced. Blocky, whatever. All around the same section of the video.
I had the same problem with Maxell DVD media, interestingly, other DVD-r's made by others do not experience any problems in any of the DVD players. Diamond Vision included.
Could it be my player just doesnt like TAIYO YUDEN?
My burner is a Pioneer DVR-106D firmware 1.08
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Standards compliant DVD media is not guaranteed to be compatible with all standards compliant players, writers or recorders. Furthermore, the media you have used might be compatible when written on a different writer.

Are they 16X TY's? I had problem with those. I've always had my best luck with Verbatim -Rs.
You could also get this app to tell you the true maker of the various blanks. Run those that work/don't work through it for clues on what to buy or not buy.

They are Taiyo Yuden TYG02's, DVD-R8X.
I used Nero express, and burned at 4x. My Nero program only allows me to burn up to 4x speed.
Could this have anything to do with the problem? If a disc is rated for 8x speed, is it ok to burn at lower speeds.
One more question, is there a program out there which can analyze a burned disc and see any problems with the burn?
Thanks alot everyone for your help. Still have alot to learn. -
Hopefully they are real as many junk discs use that ID. Many folks claim burning at a slower speed is better.
You can try a 'Transfer Rate' test in Nero CD-DVD Speed. -
The 4x speed limit isn't Nero its your drive. (According the DVD writer list).
There are lots of potential reasons for problems with an elderly DVDwriter.
There is probably no media on the market today which was on the market when your writer was new. Although firmware updates may have made some newer media compatible with your drive they probably have not been adequate to compensate for all modern media.
Your drive may show other signs of age and wear, which not manifesting themselves with other media.
If increased compatibility is your goal, a new drive might be in order. A new drive is likely to cost a small fraction of what your Pioneer cost when new. -
You might want to try creating an ISO IMAGE FILE first with ImgBurn then burn that ISO IMAGE FILE to DVD using ImgBurn.
Often times ImgBurn ... when used this way ... will provide a better quality burn which tends to translate to broader compatibility.
NERO is really not recommended for DVD Video burning.

oldandintheway hit the nail on the head. I suggest you call a few friends together and say a few kind words over your OLD 106 burner and then lose it, donate it to charity or throw it away. When you can buy a new Pioneer 111 for $40 or so, it is false economy to continue to use your 106. If an old drive doesn't recognize the media ID on newer media, it cannot use the correct write strategy which results in poor burns AND reduced player compatibility.

you can update the firmware on your PIONEER 106 drive first before you decide on whether to replace it with a new dvd burner. use discinfo or nero info tool to find out the firmware on your drive. as FulciLives mentioned create a iso image then burn the TY media you have with IMGBURN. Nero isn't the best to use for dvd media especially NERO EXPRESS.
the latest firmware for you drive is version 1.08

The OP says he has 1.08 so what he has is the best he's gonna get from his burner.
I don't have any trouble with Nero Express, Nero burning rom or any of their family of products, of course I see no reason to upgrade to Nero 7.
And frankly using imgburn to convert to ISO and burn just makes a process slowed by the old drive, even slower.
Either live with the situation as it exists now, or trash the drive. -

It doesn't take long to create a iso image using IMGTOOL CLASSIC. :P
IMHO there's no reason to trash a drive just because it doesn't burn well w/TY media.
to:cdcnlub02 try using another brand of dvd media like VERBATIM and create a iso image then burn with IMGBURN. only then will you know for sure if your dvd burner is toast. if it can burn the VERBATIM dvd media without any playback problems then there really is no need for a new dvd burner. try using the TY media with IMGBURN as well. only then will you know for sure if your dvd burner needs to be replaced. it's not hard to create a ISO image by using IMGTOOL CLASSIC.

It may just be a media problem. Whats the media code on the Maxells?
I had problems playing some TAIYO YUDEN DVD-Rs x4 in my older JVC player. This same player has played everything from cheap x4s to x16 verbatims. -

Seems when I burn at 4x speed the problems on the Diamond Vision DVD player. When I burnt at 2x the picture was clean.
Maybe the writer only works correctly on the lower speed? -
After all the testing I have come to the conclusion that the burned Taiyo Yuden disc's written at 4x work well on my Samsung set top DVD player, but perform poorly on the Diamond Vision (cheap Walmart DVD player).
Seems when I burn at 2x, the Walmart DVD player plays the TY discs with no real issues.
Kinda strange, ain't it? -

I guess I should purchase a new burner. Would it matter if I purchased a 16x burner even though my blank TY media is rated for 8x speed?
Thanks again. -
My old pioneer 105, 4 - 5 days before it stopped fuctioning, created me coasters with T.Y. discs but not with other media.
After I got a new pioneer 111, the rest T.Y. discs of the spindle, didn't have any issues again.
Maybe your driver sends you signals that it is the time to replace it!
cdcnlub02, it won't be any compatibility issues from what I know. -
There is no problem using a 16X burner. All new ones are rated at 16X max recording speed and a few are rated at 18X max recording speed. The burner manufacturers are competitively driven to match the performance of other manufacturers. When you put an 8X disc in a 16X burner, the burner determines from the media ID that it is 8X media and will not attempt to write any faster than the 8X rated speed.

I'm one of those people who keeps equipment for a long time, but when inexpensive equipment is 2 1/2 generations out of date, it is usually self defeating.
4x drives are that far gone, and drives need updating even when not obsolete. It ain't about TY media, its about no longer being able to confidently buy any media. -

and scroll to the bottom for a discussion on why burning DVDs with Nero is a bad idea - unless you really don't care that at some time in the future your DVDs may be unwatchable because one bad sector wiped out the same BUP and IFO on the disc. -

I wonder ... do I get the Pioneer 111 or wait for the next one (seems to me the 111 has been out for a while now)?

As for longevity of content, 16x media are not the same as slower media, there is too little history to tell us what the life span of the media is. We have only just begun to understand the lifespan of CDs and they are lower than expected. Periodic copying to new media, or backup on magnetic media or flash are prudent for important data or video masters. Over the past few weeks I have transfered over 300 CDs of music to magnetic media. As time permits I will transfer my entire audio library. One or two more HDD price drops and I'll begin transfering my video library. -
