I have a quick question. I have been researching it and keep getting mixed answers. I am building an HTPC. Right now i have directtv and their tivo. With the htpc i would like to get rid of there tivo and use a tv tuner card to capture the signal from my directv. I want to albe able to record one show while i watch another. Same thing with the HD channels. is it possible to do this by taking the output from the directv box that would normally go to the tv and put it in the tv tuner card and then out to the tv and use some software on the computer to record it or am i asking to much. I basically just want the same function as the directv tivo has now but not pay them for it. The tuner cards i keep seeing say stuff about they recieve over the air signals. is that all that they get or can i watch all of my directv channels through the computer. THanks

No. The tuner card has no way to see the DirecTV tuner other than as an analog input. It can't tune the sat channels, only OTA TV with an antenna or cable analog channels. It may be possible to control the DirecTV tuner with a IR blaster type device from MCE.

Yes, the sat box analog output can be connected to the tuner card analog input and the PC can record that at standard def. It is possible to control the tuner from the computer PVR program with a IR device. This gets a bit advanced.

Better to connect the TV to the sat box for quality viewing. Connect the HTPC to a different TV input to watch shows stored on the PC.

Thanks for the help man. So if i hook the sat box straight to the tv can i use another output to the computer in order to record that and then take the output of the computer into a differnt input into the tv. Will that get me to be able to watch one show and record another?

Not with my old directtv box. On mine, which is the old school one, has only 1 channel out. To get 2 channels out I would need a multi-head dish and 2 receivers. Then I could watch 1 show and record the other.

I don't know how the new receiver boxes or their tivos work since I don't use them. But I bet it will require a 2 room subscription at least. Now that sounds right for directtv.

Maybe I didn't say it correctly.

    1 channel = 1 head = 1 subscription. 2 channels = 2 heads = 2 subscriptions (more $$ per month).

I think it's called multi-room or something nowdays.

I'm poor so I can only afford 1 channel.
