mencoder strange interleave on AVI

Basically how to I set audio interleave on mencoder to fixed 50ms (1.2 video frames@ 24fps) instead of the normal alternate with video frame?

this is how gspot says the demo.avi is done. It plays properly. everything encoded has sound going ahead of the video.

VirtualDub (not VirtualDubMod) has a setting to do this, with even with stream copy/no recompress the actual file has 72ms rather than the 50ms requested and video plays very slowly compared with input file (audio same pitch).

Anyone anyideas whats going on here?
