  1. Hey, I have a lot of little movies that are XVID or an outdated DIVX file. Does anyone know a pretty good program that is free to convert them from that to a divx or AVI file.

P.s I don't need something with a lot of options, maybe just adding subtitles, but that's about it.

The two are almost identical and compatible. Alot depends on the encoder and the encoding method used, but the fundamental difference between Xvid and DivX is really a bit of information in the video stream identifying it.

It's kind of like a "stamp" saying Xvid or DivX and that's it. (Although DivX may have a few more of these "stamps".)

Don't waste your time converting. Instead, if you really must, just change the FourCC information (if your encoder allows it) to change this "stamp".

In summary, without this "stamp", they are pretty much the same thing.

  4. Xvid is just Divx backwards. Clever.

Imagine each other's films played backwards to each other. LOL

Xvid came from DivX. The dawn of Xvid came from a rebellious movement from DivX, to support open-source development, and get away from policies that DivX implemented. Essentially, it produces similar and compatible video to DivX with a different header.

Funny, DivX started off as a rebel themselves when they hacked into MPEG-4 and used an AVI container to distinguish themselves.
