  1. Hi,

Whenever I rip a non-region 1 DVD (and of course, set it to be region free) it still won't play on my Sony DAV S500. I even tried setting the DVD to region 1 but it still won't play it. Please note that this DVD player can play any other DVDs I author or rip. I double checked that my resulting DVDs are region free (or region 1) with Nero's utils so it seems that my player is recognizing something else about the disks?? What could this be and how can I avoid it? Note that I am trying to keep the menus etc. Also note that, as you may have guessed, my player is unhackable and set to region 1.

    Any help greatly appreciated,

    Paul

  2. The most likely reason would be that the non-Region 1 discs you have ripped are in the PAL television format instead NTSC. Your Sony DAV S500 may only be able to play NTSC discs regardless of region code.

Region 1 is in fact NTSC, but region codes and television systems are two different things. You may be able to create a Region 1 or 0 DVD from a different region disc, but whether or not your player is able to play a different TV system is a separate issue.

Sony is also good at putting the word 'region' into error messages regarding incorrect format, just to confuse everyone.

  4. That was it - PAL fmt. I used IFOEdit to fool it to think it was NTSC and it kinda works. After I make a menu selection it returns to the DVD screen. Then I hit play again and it plays the first chapter and from there I can jump to the others.

Thanks for the info and especially the super prompt replies!
