I wanted to add permanent subtitles to a videofile, so I took the avi and converted it to an mpg (with subs by using an srt file with ffdshow) with tmpgenc.
I played it, it looked wonderful, but no sound. This happens a lot and what usually helps is extracting a wav from the avi and using the wav as the source for the mpg.

But this time it does not work!!!

I'm kind of in a hurry, because i need to show this videofile to my class (with subs that are understandable language) this week, so any help is very, very much appreciated.

Thanks for your fast reply, Baldrick.
Yes, the wav played fine, but maybe there's someting wrong with it anyway.
I am now trying more or less what you suggested: I converted the audio in the avi to a new avi with the same video but pcm audio with a tool included with avi2vcd and put it back into tmpgenc and I am currently standing on my head while burning scented candles and praying to the pantheon of digital audio & video gods. This has worked in the past, although my colleagues now avoid sitting at the same lunch table with me and the stopped inviting me for after work time drinks
