I was installing some video editing software and encoders. When I played a WMV file on Windows Media Player 9, I get this:
WMP 9 plays MPEG files fine and Windows Media Player 6.4 plays both WMV and MPEG files fine so it's not the video files, it has something to do with the player.
I installed SP2 as well. I didn't want to, but I needed it to install the trial version of Premiere Pro 2.
edit - Apparently all the software and SP2 installations somehow screwed up the file associations. Even though the WMV file type in the Folder Options in the Control Panel was associated with WMP9, I kept getting the Grateful Dead playback until I manually re-associated the WMV file type with the Media Player.
