XLD is quick, but you have to set the Prefs first. Thanks for the tip. According to wikipedia, Monkeys Audio only works in Windows. Maybe someone needs to send them an update.
Max only works in Tiger. I'm still using Panther.

Is there an actual need for APE straight to MP3? APE to WAV/AIFF to MP3 (which is what any tool would be doing anyway) is pretty easy with xACT and iTunes. This is a non-issue.

Neither CocoaMonkey nor xACT do APE->MP3 though xACT's coder has expressed an intention to add the function to an upcoming version.
