I've seen these DVDs in a lot of stores, I found a good price at a store and bought a pack of them. Now I'd really like to know the media ID of these before I open them, as the store has a no return policy once the package is open. These are them below:
http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=010146&cid=719.88
Also, I was wondering if there was a website which connects media IDs to pictures of the packaging in retail stores, or other model numbers on the packging. I mean its really annoying cause theres no way to tell what your buying without the media/manufacturer ID, and its nowhere on the packaing.
So if someone by chance has these discs, and could provide me with the media ID and manufactuer ID, I'd appreciate it.
Anyways,
Thanks in advance.

Those will be either SONY16D1 (made in Japan by Sony or in Taiwan by Daxon for Sony) or TYG03 (made in Japan by Taiyo Yuden).

Ok, I went to this FAQ, and so those are both considered 1st class media. That sounds good, its just it says that one of the past producers for sony were considered 2nd class. I was just wanting to make sure this wasnt an older batch which has been in stores for a while I supopse.
But then are sony brand discs generally in the 1st class? Because according to that FAQ its manufacturers are only in 1st class (except for ricoh in the past). -
Okay - appears you are in North America so that simplifies things a bit. The short answer is that "Sony brands are a safe bet". Not as safe as Verbatim but close. IMO
The long answer is Gen-An answered your question. Sony 16x DVD-R is always SONY16D1 (by Daxon) if manufactured in Taiwan and either SONY16D1 (by Sony) or TYG03 (by Taiyo Yuden) if manufactured in Japan. Look on the side of the cakebox in the vicinity of the UPC. Should indicate the country of origin. The preferred would be either media ids originating from Japan. The MIT SONY16D1 media is decent stuff also on most burners. I'm not saying the MIT Sony is necessarily 2nd class - just that the MIJ is better. It has been a long time since I really looked at the Digitalfaq classifications so I would rather not refer to a specific classification and stick to a simple comparison of the two id's in question.
Good luck. -
Ok thanks a lot guys, I'm gonna crack the seal. I was using some 2nd class ones for a while, (before i knew about the grading system) and didn't have too many problems. And these sound like a safe enough bet. Next batch I buy will be from japan.
Thanks again and take it easy. ^_^
