  1. Does anyone know how to remove subtitles (that are not permanent) on an AVI file? on a mac os?

  2. If the subtitles are printed on video track, there is no way to remove them /not on Mac and not on PC/ except to cover them with a black bar...If you have separate .sub or .srt or any other subtitle file then just remove it /delete/ and it wont be loaded with .AVI...

  3. the subtitles were added later (like fansubs), so i don't think they're printed on the video track. . or are they?

If there is no accompanying .sub, .srt or similar txt file with your AVI then subs are probably printed on video track..However you can check that by opening .avi in QuickTime and then hitting command+j...Movie Properties window will pop-up and there you can look for subtitle track and disable it if there is one...If not then subs are printed on video track...
