    Dear Friends,

I have gone through all the tutorials in this website to convert VCD to DVD. This website has lots of very useful info. Thanks to everyone who has provided all the valuable info.

But in all the articles, it is mentioned that Isobuster is free and can be downloaded from www.isobuster.com. But when I check the website, it costs around $30. I am looking for some freeware to convert dat files [VCD] to mpeg [to burn in DVD]. Any guru out there to help me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks & Regards!
    Nithi.

Vcdgear will convert .DAT back to MPEG for you. You will of course need an authoring program to 'make' the VIDEO_TS folder/files though.

  3. You can select "free version" when running Isobuster for the first time, the free version has limited functionality(eg extract ISO/Joliet but not UDF).

Standard VCD mpeg1 video is already DVD Complaint -- the audio just needs to be converted to 48khz.

I recently converted some old VCD's to DVD by just renaming the *.DAT files to *.MPG, and brought them into my authoring program. No re-encoding was needed on the video (which is a good thing considering the highly compressed source video on VCD).

    Regards,
    George

As mentioned, VCDGear. Select "dat->mpeg" and check "fix MPEG errors".

The free version of SVCD2DVDMPG will demux the MPEG and convert the sound to DVD compatible 48k sampling.

    You can author with GuiforDVDAuthor.
I've put 10 TV episodes from VCDs to one DVD with a simple menu, rather more convenient.

If you need to edit the MPEG, Womble MPEG2VCR is very reliable, and excellent for retaining sync, but not free. TMPGEnc in "trial" mode works on MPEG1, though not MPEG2, so that can be useful. If you use these to join or cut MPEGs, check that sync is retained before authoring.

First, I would like to thank all those who have replied.

kush : Will try vcdgear. My IBM Think pad has "IBM Record Now" to burn DVD.

MOVIEGEEK : When I tried to use the free edition of iso buster, I found the feature "Extract but filter only M2F2 Mpg frames" disabled. So, I could'nt convert my dat file to mpeg

GeorgeW : I have tried this too. I renamed the dat file to mpeg file and used that mpeg file to burn a DVD. But when I play the DVD, the movie was running very fast [10 min movie was over in 4 min]. Also the audio was corrupted.

AlanHK : Thanks for your suggestion. Let me try VCDGear first.

Thanks a lot gurus for the super fast replies.

    Regards!
    Nithi.

    Hi Guys,

I could use vcdgear to convert .dat file to .mpeg file. But my DVD authoring software allows me to burn only 2hr of video in the DVD. Which means I can only copy 2 VCDs in one DVD. Is it normal? How can I burn more [duration of] videos in the DVD?

    Thanks Guys,

    Regards!

By reducing the bitrate when encoding or by using DVDShrink after authoring.

VCDGear is good for that, VCDEasy also. ISOBuster should work. Probably what you're trying to do is [Extract ...M2F2...blahblahblah] while reading from the UDF filesystem. If find the same file listed in the ISO9660 filesystem, you shouldn't have any trouble extracting it, even with the free version.

No, he shouldn't be encoding at all. And I doubt Shrink will work on MPEG1, and wouldn't be advisable if it did.
