crappy quality from dvd

I know my system is on the very low end for trying to dvdrip, (p2 300 mmx, 512 ram 40 gigs hd) but I have been trying to rip a dvd (goonies) the end quality was VERY bad(blurry, & sometimes shadow artifacts).. I tried Sefys & pinoys walkthroughts, I tried dvdx,dvd2svcd (cce crashes on mine)flask,mpeg mediator,ripitall, and easydivx..

I tried to rip to standard VCD (23 & 29 fps),svcd,and even divx..

Is my box to low to get the quality or is there something I am doing wrong?

I tried multiple passes on the ripping also with no luck..

I tried vbr & cbr..

I ripped it with smartripper..


Any ideas? Or is the only way I will get good quality is to upgrade? Thanks

try useing Claddvd to rip. the files are VOB and there is NO encodeing done so you have to convert it useing DVD2AVI then encode it......

one more thing, the files are about 4-5 gigs total so make sure you have plenty of space for storage and conversion.......

Is there a difference in which program I use to rip from DVD (clad vs smartripper)

I will try clad though.. Thanks for the input

PS.. I have about 30 gigs free , scanned/defragged and endtasked all junk running in the background..

I think my box is just to slow for it..

so far. . .
* Smartripper -> DVD2AVI -> TMPG

Then,
* in TMPG, drag in your file, ie, goonies.d2v
* in TMPG, load in a standard SVCD templage
* then encode

In your case, you want to see what kind of quality you can
expect from the SVCD template.

Just keep trying.

i never tried smartripper. clad is very simple to use. that probably why i use it. i think with smartripper and some others DVDX. they do the encodeing during the rip. i have tried DVDX and i didn't like it at all. Claddvd gives you the file directly off the disk so after you have to encode. this to me gives better results than ripping and converting at the same time.......let me know how clad works for you.........

I dont think it should matter running the encoding with the system you have. The only thing is it will take longer to encode. Try using smartripper, dvd2avi & tmpeg. Download Pinnoy's VCD template. You will still get blocking and artifacting but thats about as good as VCD gets.

shorsfall, i disagree with the noiseblocks and artifacts part. i have made many vcd's without any of either. my quality is just as good as vhs sometimes better. i have heard alot about smartripper. i think i'm gonna have to crank it up and see what it might be able to do for me..........

One more thing to remember is that a DVD uses 10 to 30Mbits/sec and a VCD from 1 to 3MBits/sec. I'm pretty happy with the results but they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Just make your constant bitrate set at 24-2500. This should be very good quality for a VCD.

BTW - The encoding process is entirely digital, so your system's performance characteristics won't affect the quality of your final video, it will only make the encoding ungodly slow.

DVD bitrate never gets anywhere near 30Mbps, the spec. maxes out at 9.8Mbps! Still, the general concept applies - DVDs have a lot more data to work with and thus a lot higher quality.
