  1. If I have a bunch of short AVI clips (same codec, dimensions, Divx/Xvid or mp4) and want to edit them without any conversion (to save time), so look like one seamless video clip, what fee program do you recommend ?

Just simple drag, drop and result.

    Cheers

You'd be hard pushed to find a simple drag, drop and result solution. Try AVIdemux -

    Load your first file
Use the slider along with the A and B buttons at bottom of the screen, they look a bit like shopping trolleys
Hit the delete key to bin the part you don't want
    Repeat for other scenes
Hit CTRL+ALT+A to load your next file
Repeat the deleting and appending procedures until you have done all your files, make sure video and audio are set to copy then save your new file.

The files must be identical - same resolution, same codec, same audio - or they will have to be re-encoded.

  4. Just tried avidemux and it did joint the 2 divx clips I asked it to join, but the saved file is not a format I recognise.
I used the 'copy' section for both audio and video and after it created the file, I tried to open it and it asked me what program i want to open my file with, I chose Windows media player because it can open the original video file. BUT WMPlayer could not open the file created by avidemux (i can play the created file within avidemux).

How can I create a vieo file that is exactly the same as the original ?

    Add .avi to the filename.

  6. OK now we have progress.

Video is perfect but I have no sound.

The original avi has IMA ADPCM and when I check the properties of the created file, it says IMA ADPCM, but non of my media players will play sound.

Also, when I play the original or created video within avidemux, there is no sound. Is that normal ?

VirtualDub might do the trick. No drag and drop feature, but still simple:

    1) Open first AVI file then File -> Append for all additional ones.

    2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy.

    3) File -> Save as AVI... and choose your filename.

Same applies as what guns1inger said.
