what does that really mean, in the terms , of playing movies or files

it will play and MP4 ?, an AVi ?, or that it will read a VOB that been recoded using Dvix

I keep seeing mpeg4 orDviX compatible, in specs or listings, but no info about what files it plays, or is this mean MUSIC files not video files,

There are a number of different flavours. There are those that are Divx certified, those which are Divx/Xvid compatible, and those that support a range of other formats as well. Generally they will all play Divx/Xvid encoded video in an avi container (and the source doesn't really matter), with some restrictions on the settings used. These restrictions vary by player. Mpeg4 is a generic description for any codec based on mpeg 4 specific cations, but in this case is usually is restricted to Divx and Xvid unless otherwise specified.

Best bet, read the comments posted around the forums on different players (the player forum is a good place to start) and see what people like and don't like.

If you are encoding the videos yourself, then it really doesn't matter what you get, so long as it is reliable. You can tailor your encoding to match it's restrictions. If you are downloading material then you are taking pot luck on quality anyway, and it won't really matter what you get - some will work and some will have issues.
