Before I begin to author my first dual layer DVDs, is there anything that I need to know to make sure it comes out right? I've created a handful of single layer DVDs with great results but now that I have more footage with each project, I want to switch to dual layer. I have a five pack of RiData DVD +R DL 2.4x that I bought from Rima.com.
I use TMPG DVD Author 1.6 to create my DVD output folders and then use Nero Burning ROM 6.0 which supports dual layer burning for my NEC dual layer burner.
Any advice would be appreciated...

Give it a try, but Verbatim DL seem to presently be the only discs to give consistent results with DL. And ImgBurn seems to work much better than Nero with DL. Some have no problems with Ritek media.
The problem is that some burners seem to have problems with DL. And the 'layer break' where the DVD needs to switch to the second layer seems particularly problematic. I wish you luck, but if you have problems, think 'Verbatim and ImgBurn'.
Unfortunately, DL is not 'mainstream' just yet. Not all players may recognize the disc also -
Author as normal. I use Ulead DVD Workshop 2 and set it to a DVD9 project size. I burn with the PgcEdit/ImgBurn method.
You never want to use Nero or let software make layer break decisions without your explicit input.
You also want to use Verbatim DVD+R DL media and nothing else. Especially not Ritek junk.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

My recommendations would be to third the recommendation for Verbatim and to strongly encourage you to stick to +R DL and not to use -R DL at all. I use PgcEdit to create ISOs for dual layer burns which I then burn with ImgBurn. I strongly recommend NOT using Nero as at one time it totally botched the layer break and everybody seems scared to try it again to see if they ever fixed the problem. Just FYI, -R DL is kind of hokey and it requires special settings to burn correctly or you'll get a coaster. In my opinion it's just not worth the hassle and you should stick to +R DL discs.

I can't seem to burn more than halfway through the second layer with Ritek DL disks with any tool. Fortunately I was given a 25 pack of the Sony labeled Riteks to play with. Now off to try other drives when time permits.
