Is it possible that Nero 5.5 doesn't want to write DVD's with my new NEC (sony) 1773 because the software itself is old? Free CDBurnerXP burned dvd okay. If so, is there a reason at all to buy newer version of Nero, meaning what do you think about this free softaware?

I think it depends on what kind of Nero you have. It it is OEM or bought outright, it will workwith any burner. But if it came bundled with a drive, it is coded for that drive. My older versiono of Nero was that way. I bought version 6 by itself and it works on any computer.

I would be very surprised if Nero 5.5 would work with any newer burners. I had to upgrade to 6X better than a year ago as 5.5 wouldn't work with any of my burners. I'm using 6.6 at present and probably in the future I will need to upgrade again to 7.0 or higher. But I hope not.

It's a shame too. I liked 5.5. It was much less bloatware like than 6 or 7. I would just prefer a version with only Nero Burning ROM and they can keep the rest.

I too like Nero Burning ROM as well but recode has gotten me out of a few problems when Shrink, Decrypter, CloneDVD and others crapped out on a copy. Recode worked when the others died right at the beginning of a dvd rip.

I started to get Power Calibration Error with my previous Nec 1300, and I think it was hard to find compatible dvd-media too. I decided now it's time to change to new drive. So I was little confused when Nero didn't recognize this new drive at all.

Yeah, that Nero came with this previous drive, it even have a cd-case with Nec -logos and there is other softwares too, if I remember right. So newer version of Nero would propably work?

That's shame, because I could then bought straight away drive packed with software and all those stickers and things Now I just got bulk-packed drive, in good price of course, but adding Nero to that... hmm.

If you just need Nero for burning DVDs, you can use the freeware ImgBurn instead. It will work with ISOs or a VIDEO_TS folder. Or you may be able to find a OEM version of Nero 6X.

You can also use Imgburn to burn data. Pretty much anything except redbook audio.

Thanks for answers, maybe there is not need for Nero at all I'm just so used to burn with it, so it feels like a synonym (right word?) for burning.
