Complete newbie here.
I had my dad's old 8mm home videos put on a DVD by a local outfit.
Let's just say Dad was no cinematographer.
I want to be able to edit it in iMovie-- take out some sections, reorder them, etc. There's also a part where my dad used the 8mm camera to take still photos, but they are in the DVD as video so it flashes through them. I want to be able to pull them out and/or linger on them a while. Then I want to put in all back on a DVD as a gift for my parents.
What is my easiest way to do this? I am unlikely to do much more so I don't care about commercial DVDs and there is no sound. I guess I might add a soundtrack.
Here are the files currently listed on the DVD:
video_ts.BUP
video_ts.IFO
video_ts.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
Any help is much appreciated.

The easiest thing to do is to convert the video to either DV or MPEG 4 so it can be imported to iMovie. There are many applications that can do this. If you have Toast 7 or 8 you can use it for this. MPEG Streamclip (with Apple's Quicktime MPEG 2 Playback Component) and Cinematize also are good. I think there is one called DVD2DV or something like that.

Great help. I got DVDxDV and it got the files into quicktime no problem.
Next problem: It broke it into 7 segments of about 8 minutes each. I imported them into iMovie with no problem except 1. When I try to do that one I get an error message that says it can't be imported because there is not enough disk space. It is the same size as the others and I was able to import others before and after. They are all about 1.69GB and I have plenty of disk space.
Any ideas why I get this error message for only this file? -
not sure why you're geting an error message but mpeg streamclip allows you to edit the video without having to convert to DV which avoids the very large files, from there you could use ffmeg or mpeg2works to make dvd compliant files...
