My end goal is to make a animated gif from a clip from a protected dvd movie.
    Here is my question:

What's the best way to select just a 10 or 20 second clip from a protected dvd and convert it to a avi file? Once I have the avi file, I think I can manage to make it into a animated gif.

I am a noob so please be kind. I have no idea what software I should use to accomplish this task. Most discussions do not say what software is capable of selecting little clips from a dvd and converting it to a avi file.

    Thanks

with fairuse wizard (full version) can you cut out what you want and save as avi (divx, xvid).

you could also dvd shrink in reauthoring mode, see https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=502&howtoselect=3;6#502 , to cut out the clip in a vob file that you later can convert to avi with autogk, virtualdub, etc

Thanks, I will definitely give fairuse a try.
Do you have any suggestions for software to convert the avi file to a animated gif?
