    Hi

Im trying to extract the video and audio files from an mkv container with Mkvtoolnix, but everytime I try to play the extracted video in WMP, it tells me that the video is either corrupted or it is a format that is not supported.

I tried saving an avi file I already had into the mkv container with vdubmod and extracted the video with Mkvtoolnix and I was able to play the video clip.

Could the mkv file Im working with be corrupted, even if I can watch it?

You have to have the Matroska/MKV filters/codecs installed in order to be able to view MKV files using Windows Media Player (though, personally, I'd recommend a different player, especially if there's multiple audio streams and/or subtitles), or other media players, with the exception of VLC, and possibly mplayer, maybe others.

Edit: Since the tool auto-link didn't kick in (not that I was expecting it to ), you can find the necessary setup packs and more info at http://packs.matroska.org/.

Not all mkv video streams can be extracted to avi. Native AVC or real video for instance can't.

Thanks for the link, Ai Habara.

I tried watching the files on Media Player Classic and it works there. I think there might be something wrong with the file because it sometimes stops for a few seconds in and then starts up again. Plus the subtitles that are included dont work.

    @ celtic_druid

I tried using the matroska diagnostic tool on the file and I get the following:

    Track 1 : Video

    Codec : (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC)

Does this indicate that the video I have can't be extracted to avi?

Yes. You will get a raw H.264 (ext = .264) stream.

You could then use avc2avi to mux it to an avi container. Can't see the point though. It won't play on standalones or anything.

Sorry for resurecting thread, but . ..

I did all that and then tried to open with VDM. It seems to open ok but doesn't preview anything.

The reason I'm doing this is coz I wanna trim/edit the video. Should VDM handle the avi now or not ?
