    Hi,
I was wondering how long it takes on average to copy and burn a DVD Movie?

I just bought a Pioneer DVR-111D External Burner that I have connected to my computer via the USB 2.0 port and am using RipIt4Me to back-up my movies with and then using Nero 6.6.1.4 to then burn the movies to disc.
I have already backed-up two of my DVD's and I like the way this setup works, straight forward, easy and it turns out excellent quality copies but it takes apx. 4 hours or so to copy and burn one movie?
At this rate I am likely to be done backing-up my collection within the next few years

Is this amount of time normal?
If not could somebody please explain to me how I can cut the copy/burn time down to a reasonable time using the setup I mentioned above?

Also in the instructions for my burner it mentions that to burn at 12x or 16X speeds to use Pioneer designate disc media and to use a 80-wire cable for maximum writing speed...
Do I really need these to burn/copy at a decent time?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated

    Thank You

    Depending on what you are doing, this is not unreasonable. Generally;

8 - 12 minutes to rip the disc to your HDD. Varies based on speed of reader, size of disc, and amount of protection to beat.

15 minutes - 2 hours to transcode the disc to DVD5 size. If you re-author and ditch all the menus and extras, you may find you don't need to transcode at all, or only minimally if you do. This reduces overall time.

8 - 15 minutes to burn. This is dependent on the speed of your burner and the rating of you discs. It also assumes you use the Burning ROM portion of Nero to burn, and not NeroVision, which will waste time further re-encoding your material.

This is based on your system specs, such as they are. On mine, I can transcode a full disc using DVD Shrink in under an hour, with Deep Analysis and AEC turned on.

Yes, you need 80 wire cables to your hard and optical drives.

You should also verify that your drives are in DMA mode and not PIO.

Both of these items are essential for fast operations. Good Luck

Sorry for the late reply guys

    guns1inger,
Thanks,my times don't match-up with the times you give...
When using RipIt4Me it takes about 1 hour to go through all the steps(DVD Decrypter,Fix VTS, Analyzing,etc...).
If I then use DVD Shrink/encode it adds another hour and then when I use just Nero Burning ROM(I think its the Nero Burning ROM portion) it takes about 1 hour 42 minutes to burn.

If I just use RipIt4Me(skipping DVD Shrink)and then run everything through Nero Recode it takes the same amount of time.

Maybe I am going about it all wrong?

    Hi bendixG15,
I'm not sure how I would hook up an 80 wire cable to my external burner?
Here is a link to the External Burner I bought....
    http://www.meritline.com/pioneer-dvr-111d-with-usb-enclosure.html

and here is a link to the enclosure that it is in...
    http://www.meritline.com/usb20dealex5.html
Could somebody maybe take a look at what I have and help me figure out just what I might need?

Also I haven't a clue as to wether or not my burner, drives are in DMA mode or PIO?
How would I go about doing this?

    Sorry for all the questions...
I really appreciate both your help.
    Thank You

Step one - ditch Nero. Even if it is just for the time being, stop using it. Burn with Imgburn 2. I suspect that you are using NeroVision and it is re-encoding everything.

Step two - you can't use an 80 wire cable on an external burner. The burner will connect directly to the socket inside the case, and doesn't need a cable. It appears to be a USB2 enclosure - are you sure you have connected it to a USB 2 port on your PC. If it is connected to a USB 1.1 port, the speed will be drastically reduced.

Step three - some burners and DVD roms are Rip-locked. That is, they will only read pressed DVD Video discs at 2x or less. This is to discourage copying. This can be changed by upgrading the firmware with a third party firmware that has had the lock removed.

Step four - stop using bold type. It is really annoying to have the whole post in bold.

Sorry - missed that you had EXTERNAL burner.

Your burner model number is the same as mine, which is internal.

    Hi guns1inger,
I tried to install Imgburn but it came up saying that I need to remove DVD Decyrpter(if I'm not mistaken?)...I didn't go any further as I am under the impression I need DVD Decrypter to copy my movies?

Thanks for clearing up the 80-wire cable issue.
I'm not 100% sure I have it connected to a USB 2 port because up until now I thought they all were.
My computers have between 4-6 ports, how would I go about telling which ones are USB 2 port and which might not be...and by chance(which is always my luck)if I don't have a USB 2 port what would I have to do/buy to get one?

As for the burners and DVD ROMs being Rip-locked,is there any way of telling if they are or not?
I checked out a couple sites that I Googled for unlocking rip-lock protected burners/ROMs and most said that it can be harmful and to use at own risk...this makes me real leery of doing?

I apologize for using all bold type,I didn't stop to think that this might be annoying to others as for me it makes it easier to read...I will try and refrain from using bold in the future.

    Hi Bjs,
If sp2 means- Service Pack 2? then yes I do have SP2

    Hi bendixG15,
That's ok, when it comes to this stuff I miss a lot of things...

I appreciate all the help everyone
    Thank You

I have both on several machines without any problems. I don't actually remember getting that warning either. Just don't put them in the same folder.

USB 2.0 works happily with SP1

  11. I would say the problem lies with the external writer or USB bus,use Nero InfoTool to check if DMA is enabled and Nero CD-DVD Speed to check rip speed.

Pioneer DVR-111D is internal IDE drive. See Pioneer web site.
You need 80 wire either flat or round(new style) cable. Set your burner as primary drive.
Use jumpers at the end of the drive where all the connectors are.
You will see stamping on drive MA SL CS. Set your jumper under MA letters. If you have any other drive on same cable set its jumper to SL. Let Windows do the rest of the work.

Your times are long compared to my system.

I can rip with DVDshrink and burn with Nero in about 24min on an LG-4163 internal drive with 16x media and with a LG-H10 in an aftermarket USB chasis do the same in about 30 Minutes.

Using RIPit4me etc the time about doubles.

My pentium is 3.06ghz, hd is SATA but with No fragmentation. XP SP2. USB2.0

Consider defragging your hard disk. Check to make sure that your harddisk has adequate free space. Some external USB boxes are better than others. Nero CD-DVD Speed is a good idea.

The cable issue is probably irrelevant in your case, most external cases come with a 2" cable which is adequate for just about any drive.

You generally cannot affect the DMA status of the USB interface.

If your machine is old enough to have a USB1.0 interface it could be part of the problem. The drive will generally fall back to lower speed transfers on both read and write, reading at half speed and writing at 8x might lead to 4 hour results.

NeroInfoTool will tell you what your systems USB controller is.

Even if your machine has a USB 2.0 port, it will not perform at 2.0 speed if you initially installed Windows XP prior to SP1. Even if you subsequently installed SP1 and 2, the update doesn't automatically upgrade the USB speed. You will need to uninstall your USB driver and reinstall it in order to enable USB 2.0 performance.

  15. Go for the obvious // check your media .. if its rated at 1x or 2x speed then it will takes ages to burn. Get an internal drive to cut out all the USB problems and get faster transfer rates.

    Hi guns1inger,
Ok,I'll try installing Imgburn again and see what I get...

    Hi MOVIEGEEK,
Well,I tried running Nero InfoTool and Nero CD-DVD Speed but really couldn't make heads-or-tails out of what I was looking at...
When I went into Nero DVD-CD Speed and inserted a disc into my burner(I also tried the ROM as well)and then clicked start I got an Error message that reads: Read of Scrambled Sector Without Authentication(056F03)

When I went into Nero InfoTool
    Under Drive it reads:
    Read Speed- 12.0X
    Write Speed- 8.0X

    Configuration:
VIA Rev 5 or Later USB Universal Host Controller
    Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D USB Device
    Auto Run On

    ASPI:
    System ASPI-ASPI Not Installed
Nero ASPI- WNASPI 2.0.1.74 164112 Bytes November 02,2004
    Installed and working Properly

I'm not sure if any of this is of importance and can help you all help me or not?

    Hi oldandinthe way,
I actually Defraged my computer yesterday,so at least I'm one-step closer already.
Im not sure how I would go about telling wether or not my hard disk has adequate free space or what amount for that matter would be adequate?

    Hi SCDVD,
I will see if I can uninstall and then reinstall my USB driver. That's if I can figure out which one it is.

    Hi RabidDog,
My Media is rated at 16X so that should be a problem.
Right now an Internal drive isn't an option and I already bought this drive.

Thanks for all the help and patience everyone its most Appreciated
And I must apologize to you all for my lack of knowledge on all of this but I can assure you that I am trying to learn and have been reading as much as I can on all of this(aside from asking you all)but things like this tend to sink in a little slower.

My main goal right now is to get everything working as best it can with what I have.
If there is anything I should list that would help Please let me know and I will do my best to find out.

    Thank You
