  2. Do you want to create your own? You can try opening the video file in VirtualDub and apply the Subtitler filter.
This filter uses the SSA(Sub Station Alpha) scripting.
Check out http://www.virtualdub.org for more info.
I am not sure how you can edit existing subtitles extracted from DVD.

  4. You do not need to have Sub Station Alpha. The Subtitle script only follows this SSA format.
If you already have VirtualDub(if not download and install-link given above), download the Subtitler filter(from the VirtualDub page itself) and follow instructions to install it.
Subtitles are entered in a text file(extn .ssa) in a specified format(you can find a sample along with the Subtitler filter you download). Note that this is not an easy task.
MPEG-1 files can be opened using VirtualDub. Apply the Subtitler filter and frameserver to TMPGEnc to create you new MPEG.

  6. cozmickind,

log to doom9.org, they have a good section for making subtitle.

    1. use subrip to rip the desired subtitle into a text file (srt). This file will include the starting/ending point so you don't have to calculate them again
    2. use any text editor (notepad) to "translate" or create your own words.
    3. use SRTtoSSA to convert the text file to ssa format
    4. use virtualdup with subtitle filter to merge your text into the scene.

I did this before and it worked. Hope this help.
