    Hi

i got a Pioneer DVR-720H given that doesn´t read or write DVDs anymore.
It works fine with any CDs, no matter audio, video, selfmade or
bought - but not with any types of DVD.

My dealer told me the DVDburner is probably broken, and a
new one will be about 400.-€.
The build-in Drive is DVR 107 XA

I´m an Electronics engineer , so i thougt replacement would be
no problem, the DVD looks like an arbitrary PC-DVD Burner.
So i tried to use the LG GSA4260 from my PC but it doesnt work.

Does anybody have any experience with or informations about
other DVD-Burners that will work in a Pioneer DVR ? Please help me ..

and sorry for my english , im no native english-writer

    greetings from franconia

  2. The DVD reader/burner drive has a bad laser. You can probably replace the laser reader assembly inside the reader/burner with one from a consumer computer version of the DVR-107 drive. I did this with my Pioneer DVR-420H and it works perfectly fine now.

You will need to obtain a Pioneer service remote control and disc in order to remove, repair and re-install the burner drive (unless you can remove and replace the laser reader assembly without disconnecting the burner drive from the unit). The hard drive upgrade thread for Pioneer HDD DVD recorders describes this process...

@gshelley: thanks for the hints, now i spent some hours to read ( + understand ) the other
    thread.

did i understand right : if i would replace the laser unit then i don´t need the service-DVD and remote control ?
And where can i get a pioneer dvr-107 ? I looked in the web, without success so far..
Do you know which pioneer PC-DVD recorders contain a dvr-107 ?
Does other DVD-recorders contain a compatible laser reader unit ?

    thanks again for your help

  4. You can get a used DVR-107 on eBay. The service remote and disc will be required if you remove (disconnect) the reader/burner drive from the DVD recorder so that you can more easily open it up and repair it.
