I've searched for a converter that can convert the audio in a video (for example, from 5.1 to Stereo) but only found converters to capture the audio in a video and save it to mp3 or other audio extensions.

Anyone know a converter that I am looking for? Please give me a name or link!

(Sorry if this thread should be in the Audio forum)

Demux (with the usual demuxers as per format).
Load in an Audio editor that supports surround/5.1.
    Downmix to 2channel.
Save in format that can be rexmuxed into copy of original container.

AFA All-in-1, I'm not sure...HypercubeTranscoder maybe, maybe BeSweet.
    But I doubt it.

Convert the audio IN the video file :P The thing started all this was that I knew that the video file I want to put on my portable media player needed to be in stereo sound, not 5.1...
And I was trying to find a converter for just the audio because it took so much time to convert the video as well...

But shouldn't you just convert the audio??? You must demultiplex and multiplex, split video and audio and then rejoin the video and the new audio.

Ah, then there is nothing to do ^^ I though you could convert the audio in a video file.. Obviously not :P

Hmm, I think I'll stick to converting both the video and the audio at the same time then. xD

    Thanks anyway

You really didn't read the first response. It told you how to change just the audio.

    Try this, step by step

    Open your video in Virtualdubmod.

Click on Streams -> Stream List

    Right-click and select Full Processing

Right-click and select Compression. Select a codec (e.g. MP3), and configure it (set bitrates etc) - Note : You may have to install LAME MP3 to get bitrates higher than 56 kbps.

Click OK, then click Save Wav to save the new audio track.

Click Add and select the new audio track you just saved.

Right-Click and select Direct Stream Copy.

Click on the 5.1 audio track to highlight it, then click Disable.

    Click OK.

Click File - Save As, and save you new AVI with the new, 2 channel audio. Make sure that you are in Direct Stream Copy mode when you save.

Ah, I've been struggeling with that. But how does VirtualDubMod "know" that Lame MP3 is installed?

When it starts up it checks Windows to see what codecs are available for it to use. Windows XP has a basic mp3 codec built-in, but it is limited to encoding at a maximum of 56 kbps.

Yes, I realise that, but my problem is that VirtualDubMod is still limited to 56 kbs, even though Lame MP3 is istalled. So the question is: how to encode in higher bitrates using VirtualDubMod?
    Or isn't that possible anyway?

You either don't have LAME installed correctly, or you have the wrong version. Virtualdub (and mod etc) require the ACM version to be installed.

I did read the first response, but the program he gave me (BeSweet) didn't support video files...

Hmm, I've downloaded LAME MP3 but I have no clue how to install it xD Tried to start the exe, nothing happens... Just a command window pops up. Do you need to insert it to VirtualDubMod or what?

You must have missed the first line of the first response, which said to demux first, then use BeSweet
    If in doubt, Google it.

Hmm, now I got the Lame mp3 codec installed, but when I am trying to save to wave I get an error message saying:
    "Error initializing audio stream compression:
The requested conversion is not possible."

You have to read. On the tools page for LAME ACM is tells you to right-click on the acm.inf file and select install.

... and you'll need to exit out of virtualdub (if you're in it), then go back into it for it to show up.
    If in doubt, Google it.

The first one I downloaded were missing an .inf file. That was the problem Found another one with the .inf file included. =D

And by the way, I got the compressing to work somehow, obviously there were only some bitrates and that it could compress to, not all of them.

But now it works, thanks allot
