all the dvds that I backup are skipping when I playback on my stand alone sony dvd player.
the skipping happens at least once, and it goes back to the beginning of the disc. if I fast foward at the skipped portion, it will play ok.

    burner: nec3550a firware 1.06
    media: hp dvd+r
    burn speed: 4x, 8x

i am thinking of dumping this drive. it is only a few months old.

    thanks in advance.

Use DVDINFO PRO or DVDIDENTIFIER to find out the MEDIA CODE for those HP DVD+R discs. I suspect the HP discs have CMC MEDIA ID which is crappy. Before you dump the drive I strongly suggest you try using VERBATIM DVD+R & TAIYO YUDEN DVD+R media.

I agree...skipping issues are usually media related. Typically just poor quality media, however it could also be that your standalone doesn't like the HP media.

Why do you use +R's? I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's all the time. I thought -R's were more compatible to more players?

DVD-R is only more compatible for older dvd players. Most newer model dvd players can playback both formats.

Your HP media are indeed CMC. Media reports show success in using this media on some NEC drives.

Your player may indeed be old, and the source of the problem. I bought my son-in-law a new player because his old SONY wouldn't read any burned DVDs.

I don't believe your writer will booktype so that means of improving the compatibility with older players is unavailable. Apparently there is a hacked firmware which will enable bitsetting on this drive - you might track it down and load it.

If I were to dump something it might be the standalone player, not the drive. If the drive is really only a few months old and your HP media is 16x, I would burn at 16x not 4x or 8x. Your results might be BETTER.

A new player might be more cost effective than paying a premium and shipping to get TY disks.

I have that same NEC drive and a stand alone player from the year 2000, which is as ancient as can be. The player will not play any sort of DVD+R disk, but almost every DVD-R works fine. I would bet your problem is with your player and not the NEC on your computer.

Use other dvd media like VERBATIM & TAIYO YUDEN to make sure the drive is not defective.

CMC media id is crappy and the discs will deteriorate over time where they won't be readable. VERBATIM is not expensive when it's on sale at Best Buy. As mentioned your drive can booktype to dvdrom for DVD+R media by using a hacked firmware.

  9. Indeed. I would experiment some more before dumpimg any hardware.
Try the tried and tested finest media out there (for me) TY 8x G02 -R. If they give problems hardware may be an issue...unless one has a dedicated +R issue.
Someone mentioned cost of TY. This is getting old with it's inaccurate info about costing much more than other media.
They are cheaper than any media sold in my neighborhood stores...about $26.00 /hundred and a little shipping. They are well worth it. Be sure to also buy from a very respected dealer such as rima.com or another one of the few out there
Anyway, I would try more media first.
I have an 1999 Sony player (expensive at the time) and it plays great. Sometimes -very rare- it has an issue about finding the menu on start-up. With "movie only" never a problem. Havent checked the hours of use lately but last check last year was 1660 hours with the DVD and 640 hours with the CD. Adding up.
I have that writer (NEC3550a) still unpacked from a purchase awhile back so this thread has some interest to me.
Thanks for all the info everyone.
bram77, hope you get it going with nothing more than a simple media change.
    Regards,
    NL

A 50 disk cakebox of some brand of 16x, usually based on CMC is on sale at the big box stores in Massachusetts at $12.95 each week. And most weeks a 25 pack is $7.99. The often recommended www.supermediastore.com is $38.99 per hundred for 16x TY. Sure you can get 8x TY for a price which is more competitive, but 8x isn't 16x. And many users don't want 100 of any media.

To be fair the TY 16x price at rima.com is $33.99 plus $7.00 shipping to my destination.

If I were troubleshooting my drive, I wouldn't buy a 100 pack of any media I hadn't used.

  11. Keep your drive. I'll bet my next paycheck those are HP 16x (ID = CMC MAG.M01). It is hard to find a burner that will consistently burn that stuff well. I've tried it on 4 different models of LG's (4167B - H10N - H22N - 4082N), Samsung SH-182D, LiteOn 165H6S, Benq 1620 - 1640 -1650, Pioneer 111L - 108D, NEC 3530 - 3540 -3550 to name a few. That stuff is no way even close to its 8x forerunner (CMC MAG.E01). Had good success with it. I'd avoid the M01's though. Just my two cents.

Well, if you want CMC count me out of the dicussion.
And why demand 16X? I dont want 16X! 8X has proven superior.
I'd buy a 100 pack of TY to test with so when one got his stuff straighten out he'd have plenty of the best to play with and not have to go out shoping for awhile. Think ahead.

Spending money on good quality dvd media like TY will save you $$$ in the long run. Buying CMC dvd media the dye will deteriorate over time until the discs are unreadable. :P
