I just got a Philips DVDR3455H/37 DVD recorder with hard drive.
Last night I recorded three hours on the hard drive, and then tried to transfer to DVD.
I divided the recording into three segments, each was under one hour. (About 59 min. and change each.)
The recording was made at the LP (3hr DVD) setting.
The stupid machine told me the disc didn't have enough space on it to save all three files.
How can three LP recordings of less than one hour each NOT fit on a single DVD? Don't they hold three hours (and a bit more) on the LP setting?
Does anyone know if this is a known failing of this Philips machine?

Check with Philips tech support. Make sure you do everything correctly -> user manual...?

There were three of them. Each was recorded at the LP setting.
You check off the recordings on the hard drive you want transferred.
You transfer by hitting a single button after marking the recordings.
The machine then claimed it couldn't fit all three on the disc. -
...and the machine is probably right. Try different media, you may get a bit different length, or transfer 2 and see how much is left. Complaining here is not gonna be of much help I think.

This forum is for an exchanging of information and a looking for answers to problems.
Seems I was in line with that. Not "complaining here".
Why do you come here if you don't want to contribute, but only want to berate people for using the forum?
As for how much time was left, after transfering the first two 59min+ recordings, the machine claimed the disc now had 37min+ left if "SP" was used.
There should have been over 40. -
DVD recording times are approximate. As you get into longer recording times the setting may be off. So you set it to 3 hours and recorded just under 3 hours but guess what ... the file size is bigger than a single layer DVD can handle.
Suggestion? ... cut out some TV ads if you can ... otherwise in the future know that you will probably get close to but not exactly 3 hours on the 3 hour mode.

I meant at least you have to try. Nothing you can do about it as DVDR allocates time and space. Exchanging opinions is fine but you come here with that sort of a problem that no one but you can fully assess, think about it. DVD disks have certain capacity and every file you put there needs some extra space for file info. You need to figure out with the media you use what is doable and what is not. Nothing abnormal about it. If you are 1 sec short in DVDR's view it won't do what you need it to do. It's that simple. As Fulcilives explained times given are approximations not the exact ones. Some recorders do in that dept. better then others. Tech support will provide you with a guidance you need.
