I just downloaded some new foder icons and wasn't sure if I should add them to the system folder %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll or keep these new ones in their own folder? I only ask because I'm not sure if adding to the systems folder if that will cause any problems?

Don't mess with Shell32.dll. It is valuable to the OS for much more than just Icons. Just make an "Icons" folder on you HD and point the shortcuts etc. there.
