Besides a visual inspection, there is nothing you can do. Typically, a bad burn doesn't freeze up the whole system. How recent is your burner?

Are you saying you have had this media for 1 1/2 year's ?
How did you store media ?
Have you replaced you burner within this time ?
Have you upgraded your burner's firmware at all ?

Check the media for scratch's .
What else is running on pc while this burn is in process ?
Could be a sign of poor psu not coping ... check or replace (450watt and up) .
Check the cable on the back of dvd burner is fitted correctly and a snug fit ... they can work loose and cause problem's .

    For all other's :

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php ... grab hijackthis , do a system scan ... disable all non-system essential start up item's running in background ... quicktime , messenger update (this should be deleted from system) , adobe update ... ect ... restart pc , and repeat scan ... problems will stick out like sore thumb's .

Need a hand on hijackthis , just pm me .
