  2. I doubt it - not until true broadband internet access is available to everyone. And given that two of the major broadband supply methods are cable and satellite, it seems unlikely.

I live in a rural area though it is only 4.01 miles from the nearest telco switch. 0.01 miles too far for DSL (sadly, the telco won't even test the line for suitability), so I have ISDN. The cable company aren't interested, either. And satellite - no thanks. Tooooo expensive, poor latency and terrible performance when it rains....

What else is new. Microsoft was showing their iTV back in 2004's CES.

Eventually. It will be an evolution rather than revolution.

  4. Actually, Bell Canada/Bell Sympatico is in the process of getting IPTV out to customers within the next year. They have already rolled out 10 and 16 meg fiber optic hse to certain parts of Quebec and Ontario (albeit a little pricey).

Its just a matter of time now.

Not a chance in hell. Take the 9-11 CNN pipeline tribute. It was so choppy I quit watching after about 2 minutes. I'd rather watch over rabbit ears.

  6. On a 3 or 5 meg hse connection, I cant see it being a viable solution. But on a 16meg connection? I dont see why not. Thats a ton of bandwidth.

Comcast can't maintain Digital cable systems without image breakup. Imagine the effects of thousands of their users using Internet TV. They'll have to throttle the links.

Think of IPTV as an alternate way to build a cable TV+data+phone system compared to traditional analog RF distribution. The technology is closer to broadband LAN +WAN and leverages networking technology into a new application.

Deployment makes most sense in dense environments with current networking technology.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. AT&T couldn't even provide me a reliable 384k connection in the city of Chicago. Why should I trust them with my TV?

The way I see it, Satellite Broadcasts gonna turn to a hi-fi like source, while IPTV gonna be what the free to air terestrial tv channels are today
