A Player needs to match region codes or have no region codes required.
    UK is code 2
Thailand is code 3 (UK discs won't play)

A DVD recorder tuner may be useless unless it matches UK PAL standard and channels. Thailand was never a Brit or other colony so they may have gone a different path on RF.

    PAL B follows these frequencies

    UK follows these frequencies.

They don't seem to match to me in channel bandwidth, channel frequency or audio position in the channel.
Your homework assignment is to figure it out.

Broadcast frequencies don't matter, we're talking about a DVD player, not a TV.

I'm pretty sure a Thai-made player will work in the UK.
    Voltage is the same.

Would be very likely not to have any region locks, but ask anyway.

Take a couple of UK DVDs with you and use them to check.

It's been a while since I was there, but Pantip Plaza is worth checking out for electronics.

I said "DVD recorder" might be a problem.

Are DVD players that expensive in the UK that one should risk an unknown model? One might be tempted to a recorder and that could be problematic.

    @snuggels,
No worry. Most DVD players in South East Asia region are region code free.

  10. You're going to ThaiLand and worrying about a dvd player? You should come back with no money in your pockets. Also, freeview as a system is not used by other countries therefore you will not find freeview elsewhere. (you will find devices capable of receiving dvb-t(digital tv), but the program guides etc are in mheg5 so incompatible with other countries middleware). You may find what you want without the freeview bit.

We had a post here a few weeks ago where some guy who lived in NTSC land bought a cheap DVD player in Thailand and then found out that it could NOT be made to play NTSC discs at all. If you care anything about this, you are warned. Also note that there are no guarantees that you can change the region code on the player, although you might get lucky and some players (not by any brand you will have heard of though) might come already in region free mode.

I've bought there twice, both are still in use here in the UK. NO drama whatever, barring having to change the mains plug.

However, don't expect them to be cheaper there, they are about the same price. Also, if you want specific features, be prepared for every "has it got....?" question to be answered with a yes - they know you're a tourist and most likely won't return to complain.

Where are you going in Thailand if you don't mind me asking? I've been there often and may be able to suggest a shop.

Then go to Tuk.com on Pattaya Tai (South Pattaya Road). It sounds like a shop but it's a 5 floor building full of IT shops. You'll find a whole floor of Mobile phone shops, one of computers, one of Audio, one of TVs and DVD players.

Right up top are the "fix anything" lads, and they can!

I could have spent my holiday budget there easily. :P

    Here's a map.

I'm going back over for November.
