I had to replace my LG-4163B recently as I was getting terrible read problems where 50% of the discs put into it couldn't be read. A thorough cleaning didn't seem to help so I concluded the laser diode was dying. A good drive that I put hundreds of discs through so it was time for an updated drive. I got an LG GSA-H22L for $50CAD at a Boxing Day sale and then the problems began. First up....don't use any cables other than the one supplied with the drive. I had used the one from the 4163B but it was recognized as a CD burner only. Switching to the new cable fixed the problem right off the bat. Then it came down to testing this drive. Ripping discs is a big improvement over the earlier model...nice and fast with not so much as a hiccup. Then I tried some discs from my Liteon 5001. The first quirk is that half the discs I put into it get an error in the last sector of the disc resulting in a stoppage. Retrying doesn't work. It will finish if you press ignore (in DVD Decryptor). Now comes the really weird thing. When I try to burn this ISO to a +R disc, I get an error that there is not enough disc space! This never happened before with the 4163B. File sizes as listed by IMGburn are as follows:

    4,707,319,808 bytes -R (Maxell)

    4,700,373,992 bytes +R (Verbatim)

4,700,375,040 bytes +RW (Memorex and Verbatim)

So, burning with -R seems to work fine and no error messages. Burning with +R results in an error which you can of course ignore but there shouldn't be any error to begin with since the other drive never got that error and I've been using the +RWs with that for more than 2 years. Methinks LG should be informed and they can add a fix whenever they get around to upgrading their firmware for the H22L....

Used DVD Fab Decryptor and rip in file mode. The files are then burned with Ashampoo Burning Studio bitset to DVD ROM. Everything works great and +Rs work again. No stoppages at all....

Still looking for a ripping tool that can do ISOs but for now, this will have to do....
