    1. I have some mpeg4 format movies converted with xvid or DivX codecs. I was checking resolution of each film (by AVIcodec tool) and it shaws different resolutions like
    384x256
    512x288
    560x304
    592x320

and so on. As I edit my amature fillms and then make DVDs I used to the PAL resolution 720x576. I was going to convert them to mpeg4 format but after looking at other mpeg4 films with different resolutions (see above) I was confused what resolution to select. Any advices?

    2. I have a DVD disk with many series (total about 12 hours on a 4.7G DVD disk), it shows resolution 352*576 but on usual TV set (4:3) it looks normal full screen. How it can be so?

    Thank you. Michael

That's because that is called HALFD1 resolution - it is a legitamate dvd resolution accepted by the specifications.

As for the avis if you are talking about converting them to dvd you can use either the HALFD1 resolution you pointed out or 720x576. Either one is acceptable. Some say using the Half D1 is more forgiving for lower bitrate videos.

Why not do some experimentation and see what you like??
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  3. In case it isn't clear: with MPEG files (DVD) the Display Aspect Ratio (DAR, the shape of the picture as displayed on the TV screen) is independent of the frame dimensions (as measured in pixels).

For example 720x480 frame can encode a 4:3 image or a 16:9 image. Conversely, a 4:3 image can be encoded with 720x480 or 352x480 frames.
