I have a video which is mono, but has 2 channels, so the left side is blank and the right side has all the audio. How would I go about copying the right channel to the left? Can somebody tell me which programs I would need and just a quick general description of what steps I have to take? Do I need to split video from audio, fix it, then merge again, etc?

    Thanks

  2. What format is the video in? AVI? MPEG? MJPEG?
In most cases you need to separate the audio from the video (called demultiplexing or demuxing) and then replace the blank channel with the recorded channel using sowftare like Audacity.

    Thanks for the reply.

The file is an AVI file.

This is the file info listed in VLC and MPC:

    VLC
    Video Codec: DX50
    Audio Codec: MPGA

    Media Player Classic
    Video: DivX 5 600x360 29.97fps 1498Kbps [Video 0]
Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 44100Hz stereo 128Kbps [Audio 1]

  4. Or with VirtualDub:

    1) File -> Open Video File
    2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy
    3) Audio -> Full Processing Mode
    4) Audio -> Conversion..., select Mono
    5) Audio -> Compression... select codec and parameters
    6) File -> Save as AVI.

To let the mono channel run on both channels in 'stereo', with Sony Vegas, it's easy:

Right click the audio media in the timeline, then select Channels, and select '"Left Only", or "Right Only" depending on which channel you recorded on. And it doesn't matter which kind of codec your using to fix the problem, at least with Sony Vegas.
    Programs I Frequently Use:
    Sony Vegas 7
    Autodesk 3ds Max 9
    Camtasia Studio 4

I use Vegas, and love it. But is is far from the best solution to every problem. I this case, it is overkill to the extreme. Virtualdub or goldwave are far simpler and much cheaper.

I admire your enthusiasm for Vegas, but no-one is going to buy it to fix a simple problem when free tools do it faster and just as well.
