So I had been using this to keep me from switching to PIO, and it worked great: http://neodon.blogspot.com/2006/07/little-...hard-drive.html

Then I had a nasty power surge and had to get a new MoBo, do a clean install of XP, etc. Generally things have been okay, but I can't find the indicated registry keys...are there alternate ones I should be aware of?

    Thanks!

I don't understand - why are you switching to PIO at all?

If the HD is installed correctly, your IDE or SATA controller will automatically set the transfer mode.

    More info, please

Read the link - there's a flaw in XP that will default drives to PIO at certain times. It has nothing to do w/ how the HDs are installed (which is fine).

This site has a registry edit which keeps the switch to PIO from happening. Problem is...in my new install of XP, the keys I need to edit aren't there.

You can always create them in Regedit using New>DWORD>"Name", then modify by right-clicking.

I couldn't find the keys where his guide says they are, but I did find them.
In RegEdit, hit cTRL+F and search for "primary ide" -- it should take you right where you need to be.
On my machine (Win2K) the keys he talks about are located under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001

but if you aren't comfortable dicking around in your registry, I wouldn't mess with it.
also, check your BIOS settings and make sure that both your mobo and all drives are compatible with Ultra DMA 6

    That worked swimmingly, thanks!
