  1. I need to quickly rip video DVD discs to MPEG1 (I have to use MPEG1). The best speed I've been able to get so far is 3.3x. I checked out the speed sticky but have not been able to squeeze out any additional performance. I just wanted to know what are the top DVD ripping speeds that people are getting? If I bought the right equipment, how fast could I theoretically rip?

You mean converting (not ripping) DVD to MPEG1? It's a difficult one to answer as there's that many tools available. CCE is considered to be one of the fastest, but i'm not sure about it's dual CPU performance. Which tool are you using?

DVD rip = 10.5X or greater using Plextor PX712A (about 2 years old) with Ripit4me (DVDdecryptor).

Why Mpeg1? videoCDs are a waste of video quality with DVDs being under $30 per hundred.

Ripping and encoding are two different things. You can rip a DVD to your hard drive to remove the encryption, then you would have to convert the VOBs to MPEG-2 and re-encode them to MPEG-1. If you are using a program like DVD2SVCD and converting directly to VCD format, I don't know as I haven't done that in a few years.

It takes me about 10 minutes to rip a DVD to the hard drive using DVDFab Decrypter, but that's mostly based on the read speed of the DVD drive. If you are encoding from MPEG-2 to MPEG-1, depends on the encoder. CCE is one of the faster ones for that type of conversion. But encoding speed itself is related directly to CPU speed. The faster the CPU, the faster the encode.

Unfortunately, I have to use MPEG1. We create a lot of PowerPoint presentations with video at work and we find that MPEG1 plays better and are easier to work with in PowerPoint and there are no compatibility issues when distributing the presentations. My need is more speed at the cost of quality.

I'm currently using ImTOO which gives me about 3x conversion from DVD disc to MPEG1 on a Pentium 3.4GHz with a Dell 16x DVD/R.

My boss is willing to buy a PC for DVD conversion to MPEG1. Any suggestions on the ultimate set up?

Ripping from dvd = anything .

Some can be ripped at 20X ... and some can only be ripped at 2x ... it just depends on certain aspects of the dvd and who released it .

In theory the max you can rip is 16X, since this is the read speed limit for DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. I was able to get 4x conversion speed from DVD disc to MPEG1 on the HDD using a Dell Latitude D820 laptop with a Core Duo 2.16GHz/2GB RAM with ImTOO v.4. Our office will be getting a Dell Dimension 9200 with a Core Duo E6700 (4MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB) next week. Maybe I will be able to squeeze a little more speed out but I doubt I will get anywhere near 16x.

I've gotten 10-12x ripping speed on single layer and a bit slower on dual layer using DVDecrypter.

I looked at DVD Decrypter, but it only rips, it doesn't convert to MPEG1.

If you rip a DVD to your hard drive, you will end up with a file that has VOBs, etc. IE, the DVD format. If you want to convert those VOBs to MPEG1, you can use VOB2MPG to convert to MPEG-2, then convert the MPEG-2 to MPEG-1 with an encoder. But it would be easier to use a program like DVD2SVCD and use that to convert to VCD format.

I believe he means conversion (dvd to mpeg1) speed, NOT ripping speed.

He is mostly confusing everyone because he is using a snazzy "one click wonder" tool to perform the rip and conversion at the same time.

This is a two step process: 1) RIP the data from the dvd and 2) CONVERT mpeg2 to mpeg1
