I recently moved my dvd-rom drive from my old computer (suffered a hard drive crash) into my new dell, everything went fine, and the drivers all installed perfectly, i've downloaded the VLC media player to play my dvd's, but the video and audio is choppy, playback has pauses after every couple of frames that cause extrememly noticeable issues with trying to enjoy a movie. I thought maybe it was just the player (after all it is a GUI player) so i also installed and tried a copy of NVDVD player that came with a graphics card, but it played the video just as poorly as VLC. Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Computer specs:

    Intel celeron processor 2.40 GHz
Dell motherboard with intel i845G chipset
    768 MB DDR ram PC3200 (200 MHz)
3D Fuzion Geforce4 MX 4000 128 MB DDR PCI graphics card
    COMPAQ DVD-ROM LTD122

Yes, once it's been ripped to the hard drive it plays perfectly, however, there seems to be a little bit of a lag in the video..the audio is just a few fractions of a second ahead, the lipsyncing is all off...though that might have been the decrypters fault

Have you tried more than just the one movie? My first guess would be a hardware issue, possibly the DVDRom is beginning to fail?

You may want to try switching the drive to Master (if it isn't already) and verify the drive is set for DMA mode. You could also try uninstalling the IDE controllers and then rebooting. This will force windows to reload the IDE drivers and rescan the IDE bus for your drives.

ok, i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the IDE, and here's what i've gotten to, the video is fine, but the audio is...odd...it crackles and skips....a lot like music does in an older portable cd player, when it would skip....any idea what might be causing this?

    Try reinstalling/updating the audio drivers.

You could also open and watch task manager as you are trying to view a movie. Check the cpu usage and the top processes.
