Are you saying that you want to convert AVI files to standard DVD Video output?

so either something that converts to dvd video files with nice results, or an application that all-in-one does the converting and burns (i'm looking for best results)

Well, fast and easy freeware. DivxToDVD. This version should do you. http://freedownload.softonic.de/windows/vsoDivxToDVD_setup_0.52.99.exe Or spend a very few dollars for ConvertXToDVD as it has some added features and is well worth the price.

But best or better quality would be a standalone freeware encoder, authoring and burning programs. HC is good for encoding, QuEnc is another. For authoring GUI for dvdauthor or DVDAuthor gui. For burning, ImgBurn.

If you are looking for payware programs, TMPGEnc encoder and TMPGEnc DVD Author are both easy to use and not too expensive. There are many other alternatives, some easy to use, some more complex. The ones mentioned are a good place to start. The freeware ones work well also, but may be a little more complicated to use and require more studying and fine tuning.

That thread sort of mutated into my mini-guide on converting AVI to DVD.

Best longer term solution - buy a Divx/Xvid capable player and don't convert. It is very time consuming to convert downloaded avi files to DVD and to maintain decent quality. ConvertXtoDVD does an good job, doing manually with John's guide and few smart avisynth filters will do a better job, but having a player that plays the files natively gives you the same quality as you downloaded, 6 movies to a disc, and is a lot easier.

Cheers for all the tips guys, tooken and noted.

So far ive tried out only ConvertXtoDVD... and I have to say it's fairly simple and does the trick..only other program ive used in the past was Winavi. Would ConvertXtoDVD happen to be a better program to look into? (i like the simplicity)

It is better than WinAVI on three key counts

    1. It now handles a wider range of sources
    2. It is more reliable. It handles vbr mp3 correctly most times, c/w WinAVI that chokes or produces out of sync video most times. It is also a lot less likely to crash.
    3. This is the big one. It actually encodes 23.976 source at 23.976 fps and applies 3:2 pulldown. None of the others do this. The result is a much smoother source, instead of the jerky pans and zooms in conversions done by WinAVI.
