    I am new here!
    Please help me!
I have couple of .wmv format videos on my pc and I know that they can't be played on a DVD player if I burn them on to a CD-R.
    I have a Sanyo DVD-SL22
I heard that I need to convert them to a .AVI format file to play it on a DVD player?
Please tell me if this is true? I don't want to waste a CD.
Is my DVD player too old to play a CD-R with a .AVI format file on it ?
    Please tell me?
can you tell me what format does the file have to be to be played on my DVD player which is a SANYO DVD -SL22

    I'm waiting for replies
    thank you!

That doesn't appear to be a Divx (AVI type) player, so you would have to convert them to MPEG format. Either VCD, SVCD and DVD should play.

If you have to use CDs, I would try SVCD or VCD format. VCD is a lower quality. SVCD is a little better quality, while DVD is the best quality. DVDs may actually be simpler.

You will have to convert from WMV as it definitely won't play that. You could use Windows movie maker to convert the WMV to DV, then the DV video could be converted to SVCD or VCD format. There a lot of ways to do all this. Look to the left for 'CONVERT' for guides. Also look up above that for the SVCD and VCD specifications int the 'WHAT IS' window.

You may have some studying ahead of you.

    And welcome to our forums.

thanks so much! That was very much appreciated! so I know my DVD player will not .AVI format videos
so the only way to play videos is to put them in svcd format or vcd. I can use Nero for that!
And about Windows Movie Maker, do I first have to convert to DV then VCD ...how do i do that?

If you wanted to use Windows Movie Maker for one of the conversions, you would open the WMV file and save it out as DV with little quality loss. You have to dig a little to find that option. WMM doesn't output MPEG. The DV video can then be converted with most encoders to MPEG-2 for DVD.

I see ConvertXToDVD says it can handle WMV to DVD. You could try that and see how it works. The older freeware DivxToDVD may convert from WMV, but I haven't tried that. Another program that may be able to convert WMV to MPEG is the freeware SUPER. But you would still need to author it. For that there are a couple of freeware programs, GUI for dvdauthor and DVDAuthorgui.

A VOB is a part of the DVD structure and is a MPEG file with audio, subtitles, menu and other information muxed in and packaged in the VOB container. In a word, no. You will have to convert the AVI or WMV file to a MPEG format if your player will only play MPEGs.

but with nero recode ...it says i can make a cd out of dvd videos in MPEG-4 format files ....and im sure MPEG-4 format videos would play on dvd player!

Some mpeg4 format files will play on some DVD players. However it depends on which mpeg4 derivatives, and which player you have. Divx/Xvid are the most common formats. A standard DVD player will not play anything but DVD/VCD/SVCD (and many will not play SVCD well or at all)

Probably not. Most DVD players won't play DVD content on CD-R discs. A few old players with hacked firmware would do this, like some old Apex models. These days if a player supports Divx, it might play DVD on CD-R. My Philips DVP-642 will, but it's pretty ugly. It only does it in "file play" mode (ie. playing it as a data disc like for Divx) and you have to use the remote control to cycle through the audio channels until you find the one on your CD or you'll get nothing by silence. So it works for me, but just barely.
