I'm looking for a PVR software that can record closed captions. MCE records closed captions but can be viewed only if recorded Tv is played via MCE and sound is muted, and also the closed captions are not available when ms-dvr file is played using WMP. I also tried Cyberlink PowerCinema, it does not preserve the closed captions on recorded shows, only displays during live TV playback...no luck with BeyondTV either.
Does anyone know a PVR application that can record closed captions along with live TV video?

I installed ATI MMC, but it gives me a message " The TV player failed to initialize" " Check the Windows Device manager to ensure that the correct video driver has been installed and is working properly before attempting to restart TV"
I have ATI TV Wonder Elite TV tuner installed, does it also need a ATI graphics card installed ? -
The TV wonder is different from the AIW's I have already used, I've never had one and they do not seem to be well-regarded.
SFAIK they do use the same MMC software and have the same CC capabilities. The error you are getting is relatively common on MMC installation or upgrade. Basically you have to do a complete uninstall and then re-install, check over at Rage3d for complete instructions. -
I used a ATI All in Wonder X600 pro and TV recording worked, but the closed captions are not displayed when the recorded TV is played in WMP. I'm enabling captions from WMP -> Play menu -> Subtitles and captions. I use the same way to verify closed captions from DVD.

SageTV (www.sagetv.com) will record closed captions but only with the Hauppauge PVR-250 hardware MPEG capture card which is no longer being made. New ones are no longer available but you might find some on EBay. The newer PVR-150 and dual tuner PVR-500 cards dont support closed captioning under Sage.

Earlier versions of MMC would encapsulate the CC within a proprietary VCR file. Only MMC player and Ulead DVD player will play these files. MMC will display the CC, but SFAIK Ulead will not.
Newer versions of MMC will record a seperate text file for the CC and a standard MPG file. Earlier versions will also make the text file but only with the VCR type video. This text file can be converted to a subtitle file for use with most players, or it can be displayed by the MMC player.
