I know you can get varying shades of purple dye but can you buy blank DVD's with another colour dye?

The old RICOHJPN media code had an almost bluish tint, but was still in the violet range of the spectrum. I believe only DVD+-RW are significantly different in color.

so when I'm thinking that I've seen silver blanks before is that just CD-R's that were silver?

More than likely.... (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong).
DVD-+RWs have a dark gunmetal bluish-grey color. If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

This page from lordsmurf's site has some information on DVD dyes, about midway down the page: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/advancedconcepts.htm Other good info on DVDs there also.
And since this is a media thread, moving to our Media Forum. -
