Maybe.... The KISS DP-700. But I don't know if it's available outside of Europe: http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6798.cfm

Here's one company that has a chip for H.264: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/index.html You could check and see which DVD player manufactures will use the chip.

A good site for general information about MPEG-4 types of DVD players: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=98228

why don't you just back them up to DVD instead? Then they are outside your pc and you don't have to spend hours compressing to mp4.

unless this is HD, and if it is HD how are you backing that up?

Hey guys thanxs for the messages!!!

I just do not back up them into DVD because it will provide me a lot of dvd medias...Backin them up into H264 it gives around 350 to 400mb per movie...so in a single dvd-r I can back up...(sometimes) 12 movies instead of only one.

    Thanxs!!!

Why not store them on a large hard drive? Then drop them into your iPod and connect the iPod to your TV using the AV cable? Work great for me.

A 300GB HD will store about 750+ 400MB movies. Certainly an external case + drive will cost no more than $130. This way you can stay away from yet another device that will be obsolete in a few years.

Thanxs Rumplestitskin, that´s the answer I was looking for!!! I´ve heard about Ipod playing MP4, but I was not sure if it would play the H264 codec...

Once you have experienced that solution, could please answer a few questions?

1-Does Ipod supports high resolutions, for example, a 720x480 video MP4 file?

2-How is the image quality in the TV set???

3-Does Ipod support *.avi files or just *.mp4???

4-Does Ipod supports subttiles ??? *.srt files???

    thanxs again!!!

    Right???

So this does not solve my problem, cause I look for a player that plays higher resolutions...such as 720 x 480... and also needs to support subtittles...

If anyone can get any solutiuons... pls let me know!!!

    Thxs to all of you!!!

    1. ??? Don't know

    2. No. H264 on iPod is up to 640x480@30fps@1.5Mbps.

I generally encode my 720x480 DVD rips to 640x352@768kbps (not including audio). ffmpegX on the Mac does a good job. YMMV.

    <apple ipod info>

    Video

    * Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Oh the image quality at my settings (see above) is quite OK on standard TV sets. Compares well to DVD.

HDTV sets are probably another issue all together.

I use a number of tools. MPEG Streamclip (free) is available for both Mac and Windows.

H264, in a format that will play on the iPod (and play to the TV through the iPod AV cable) may be done in "320x240" (or any ratio that doesn't exceed 76800 pixels). Around 200-300kbps is plenty for that res.

The newer supported resolution is 640x480 at a much higher kbps; however, around 600-800 is plenty. MPEG Streamclip gives you two buttons to decide which version of that H264 spec you want when you ask for a "convert to mp4..." process.

The iPod's output is not designed for HD. Perhaps the next version (or perhaps an updated iTV - the original will be released at MacWorld next month) will do so. Frankly, considering Apple's moves over the last year, I'd be very surprised if HD - of something better than 480p(?) - is not supported in the next year.

Personally, I'm passing on any hardware that requires any disc (and especially of the BR or HDDVD varieties).

    Good luck!

  14. Ok guys... IPOD it really seems to be the best way to go right?

But I still got stuck with the subtitles matter...my wife does not speak English and all the movies I´ve backed up have the audio in English with brazilian portugues subtitles in a *.srt format.

A final solution, I guess would be to watch the movies alone without my wife!!! :P :P
Or find a new wife that understands the English language!!!!

    Just kiddin!!!

Any opinios regarding the subtitles loading?

I know I could re encode all the movies with the subtitles "inserted" inside the movie...but that would kill me...cause I have already encoded a lot of movies!

    Thanxs 2 u all!!!

At this moment, there is no option to add the subtitles dynamically to iPod playback; score one for DVD

I'm sure there's a PC app for embedding the subtitles. I do that with ffmpegX (on my Mac).

You've got some choices. Good luck!
