Hope this isn't too OT. I have have a Samsung HL-S5086W HDTV and a Scientific Atlanta HD Cable box. I've been using Component video cables, but just purchased an HDMI cable. When i turn on the TV, the tv allows me to tune to the HDMI input, which only happens when it detects something, also my cable box switched the digital audio output to HDMI, and that happens when the cable box detects the HDMI cable. Anyway, when i actually tune into the HDMI input, it says the signal isn't found. I feel this is something easy and feel bad about posting this, but i'm out of ideas. Any have anything else?

Is this the Scientific Atlanta 8500HD?

It has a menu selection for HDMI out. TV menus may need to select HDMI in or it may autodetect.

Older 8500HD firmware had problems splitting audio from the HDMI to the optical out. That problem seems solved at least by Time-Warner in Texas.

It is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD. I just checked the menus and don't see anything about HDMI out. I did switch the TV to HDMI input (which it lets me do). Does the autodetect on both TV and cable box come from the signal (electrical) or the cable being plugged in (physical)

You should have a menu to select 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. Maybe HDMI and analog component are both always on.

  5. I had the same problem too with the Explorer 8300HD and HDMI cable to my Samsung HDTV. When I would go to the HDMI input the screen would be "no signal". I could get the signal back by changing channels from an HDTV channel to a regular 4:3 channel. This would cause a new "handshake" between my cable box and tv. You might give it a try.

This problem would only happen to me if I had chosen "digital audio out" on my cable box menu options. If I just choose HDMI audio output, I didn't have any problem.

I am in Austin, TX and Time Warner told me on the phone that this was an issue that has not been resolved. They suggested that I just use the component outputs/inputs. That works fine and I personally can't tell any difference in the quality of the picture. But mine is just a 46" tv so that probably makes a difference.

This was the problem. I had gone through each format and they all worked, however, on the HDMI cable, only 1080i, 720p and 480p widescreen worked. I removed the ones that didn't work and now its fine... thanks!
